A well-deserved tribute to Pedro Fernández Estévez, visionary craftsman and founder of our family business
The city of Granada pays tribute to the founder of the artistic lantern workshop Hijos de Estévez by dedicating a street to him that begins at Avenida de Andalucía and ends at Calle del Escultor Pablo Loyzaga.
Additionally, in the Granada town of Huétor Vega there is another street dedicated to the founder of Hijos de Estévez, demonstrating the widespread recognition that Pedro Fernández Estévez deserves for his contribution to Granada's craftsmanship and culture.
Granada city: The street begins at Avenida de Andalucía and ends at Calle del Escultor Pablo Loyzaga. It is located in an area of urban growth and development.
Huétor Vega: This Granada town also wanted to pay tribute to the founder with a street bearing his name, showing recognition beyond the capital's limits.
He started his activity on the famous Elvira Street in Granada, epicenter of traditional Granada craftsmanship.
Later he moved the workshop with some of his children to Lucena Street, beginning the family tradition.
The workshop was definitively established at Calle Buensuceso, 37, where it continues its activity more than a century later.
Pedro Fernández Estévez was born in Alcalá la Real (Jaén) and moved to Granada at a very young age. Due to a disability affecting both legs, he became a self-taught craftsman, initially making small pieces dedicated to lighting, mainly oil lamps of the time, which would later evolve into the lanterns we know today.
His dedication and mastery made his workshop a benchmark of Granada craftsmanship, exporting his creations internationally and leaving a legacy that endures to this day.
His creations were exhibited at the World Pavilion of the New York Fair and in successive exhibitions in different countries in Europe and North America.
He received the title of Exemplary Craftsman of Spain and Distinguished Craftsman of the Province, among other diplomas and recognitions.
As the culmination of his career, he received the Bronze Medal for Merit in Work on May 1, 1970.
The creations of the Fernández Estévez saga have been exported to almost all of North America, taking Granada craftsmanship around the world.
