Lanterns and accessories created for the work of D. José Tamayo Rivas
The Zarzuela Anthology by D. José Tamayo Rivas (1920-2003), which remained on stage for years at the Teatro Nuevo Apolo in Madrid during the eighties and nineties, featured the special collaboration of Hijos de Estévez artisans.
Our workshop created handcrafted lanterns and other accessories used in the decoration of the show, elements that formed an essential part of the scenography of one of the most important theatrical productions of the era.
The lanterns were hand-chiseled by Pedro Fernández Gil, son of the founder, by personal commission of D. José Tamayo. There was a special relationship between them that went beyond art, sharing childhood memories and mischief.
These handcrafted lanterns traveled around the world as part of the shows in the world tour of the Zarzuela Anthology in 1988, bringing Granada's art and craftsmanship to international stages.

This project represents the union of two Spanish artistic traditions: zarzuela as a lyric-dramatic genre and metal and glass craftsmanship from Granada. The personal relationship between D. José Tamayo and Pedro Fernández Gil adds emotional value to this collaboration, reminding us that behind great artistic projects there are always significant human stories.
